How will the world Survive?

I graduated from the University of Lagos at the age of 21 with a Second Class upper division in Business Administration but I felt unlucky to have found myself at Eruwa, a rural residential community in Oyo State. I was serving as a youth corper after several attempts to redeploy my service location to Lagos had failed. Teaching had never excited me either so my life was boring.

In my thoughts, I longed for Lagos and its lively but stressful ambience. So I encouraged myself to endure the village lifestyle for a couple of months before finally moving back to the city. Also, whenever I remembered my academic accomplishment, my heart smiled in hope. Then, I recalled my brother who graduated 4 years ago with a similar qualification is yet to gain valuable employment, it dawned on me that life is not calculated by additions.

Anxiety filled my mind, my heart panicked like a father expecting a baby. I didn’t want to be alone in my grief so I called about six of my mates to confirm if they felt the same fear. I was a bit comforted that I wasn’t the only one who had been thinking. We pondered on what the future held for us as we shared career options on how to “make it” in Life.

We figured that one certain way of “making it” in life is to solve a recurring world problem especially in Africa as we listed Education, Environmental Degradation, Health, Transportation, Power, and Food production, as we argued which was a more fundamental need. I suddenly asked, “Can the world survive without food?” And there was a silence that echoed, “NO”. We knew that food production was going to remain relevant forever, hence. four of us went to animal and crop farming.

My name is Segun Esan, and I am an Agric Entrepreneur, 8 years ago seemed like yesterday when we identified food production as a recurring problem, and today I’m solving the problem and can say confidently that I have “made it” and I’m still making it. I wouldn’t have been able to achieve what I have now if I didn’t have a good training when I started.

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture in conjunction with synergos has set up #YFLab, a Youth Farm Laboratory to train youths on livestock farming and sustainable urban agriculture FOR FREE. This training would help young people learn from and network with experts in our sector, set them up to become agriculture entrepreneurs and help them realise sustainable income.
